It’s close to Halloween, which always feels like a good time to get a little weird.
Take a look at these 8 odd, offbeat facts about the Rock and Roll Capital of the World and you’ll be convinced it has a very strange side to it…
1. Can’t Eat Just One
They may have been invented in England, but few things are more American than potato chips. That’s thanks in part to Cleveland. It was here that chips were first mass produced, helping make them the massively popular snack they are today.
2. Why Tom Doesn’t Live Here
If you want to catch that pesky mouse that has been setting booby traps for you around the house, bad news: Cleveland law states that you need a hunting license to catch mice. Seriously. It’s on the books.
3. Something Is Afoot
If you love patent leather shoes, ladies, you may want to live elsewhere. A city ordinance makes it against the law to wear patent leather shoes.
The reasoning was that their shine might allow someone to get a sneak peak of your undergarments when wearing a dress. And yes, this absurd law is still on the books!
4. Bust A Deal, Face The Wheel
Cleveland’s I-X Center is one of the world’s largest convention centers, bringing all sorts of craziness to town, but maybe the most impressive thing about it is its 125-foot tall Ferris wheel. When it was built in 1992, it was the world’s largest indoor Ferris Wheel (and is still #2 today).
5. She Wore A Strawberry Beret
Every little girl from the 1980s loved Strawberry Shortcake, and she was born here in Clevelandtown. She got her start on greeting cards, but Kenner quickly licensed the character and turned her into one of the era’s most beloved icons. Lots of fun, plus those scratch n’ sniff stickers smelled great!
6. A Lot of Talk and a Badge
After the famed Eliot Ness was done taking down guys like Al Capone in Chicago, he made his way to Cleveland, where he became Safety Director and hunted down creepy serial killers like the Torso Killer. In a way, that ties Kevin Costner to Cleveland, too. Now whether that is good or bad …
7. Bring Home the Gold
One of the most acclaimed Olympians in American history, Jesse Owens, hails from Cleveland. He won four gold medals and embarrassed the Nazis. Which is the prouder accomplishment is up for debate.
8. Where Did He Get The Hat?
Hector Boiardi was an Italian immigrant who opened a restaurant in Cleveland called Giardino d’Italia. The restaurant did well enough so that people started asking for his recipes.
He obliged, and ended up getting quite popular. But you might know Hector Boiardi better by his other name: Chef Boyardee.
